I had an uncle (long since passed) who was an avid collector/restorer of early automobiles. I was at his house once in the 1950s and he had just acquired a 1903 Cadillac needing much restoration.

I don't think this is the same one he bought, but fully restored this is what a 1903 Cadillac looks like.

While my uncle was a small time collector, he regularly traded with Bill Harrah (Harrah's casinos). Bill Harrah had a massive collection of antique automobiles in Reno, NV. My uncle arranged for a private tour of Harrah's facility for me and my first wife. You can see the collection here www.automuseum.org

Oh Miki, that museum looks cool I love that black sporty one with the white walls...… so retro!!!! And the 1903 veteran Caddy, that is amazing! Your Uncle was cool! We spoke about Brooklands near me that has lots of lovely old cars. I love old cars they have so much character. My Helga is a relative baby at 25, but she has character, she squirted the MOT (fitness for the road), tester in the face with coolant once! She was losing coolant and it was coming through the reserve. She never lost much but decided to just as the engine was switched on that morning!

Another cold freezical day I put the window down coz it had foggied up and she refused to put it back up. I think it was coz I was late and I was driving her too hard. Anyway, after about five miles and just parked, (I'd been hitting the 'up' button for ages) and then just before I was going to give up..... she allowed it to go up and it has worked ever since!

Then another time Helga's tailgate would not open. It just would not open! I did not know what I did to upset her. Anyway, off I go to the garage and the man tried to open it, but she refused him too! I spoke to her one morning on the way to work how inconvenient it was and how much I loved her. Well I tried once parked at the hospital but she still did not yield. After a long shift I just naturally went to open her tailgate, it's coz I put my liccle rucksack there coz there spaces are thin..... and she yielded. She has never done that since. Then there was the indicatory thing and oh so much more.... oh Helga!!!!

So, I best do number 56 then. Here it is, now thinking caps on girls!!!!!!

Joe DiMaggio - I was so fortunate, baseball wise, to have grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you look at a roster from the 1930s for the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants, you would find many of the ball players who my Father either played against or with in the local baseball league.

My Father played against both Joe and his brother Dom in the Pacific Coast League. I once played catch with Joe when I was 5 years old and he was visiting friends, including my Dad, in Alameda, CA.

The Pacific Coast League was considered to be the third major league, until the Dodgers and the Giants moved to the left, ooops, west coast in the 1950s.

Left is right? To have played catch with Joe? Wow....what a life you have lived.

Hmmm, it does seem my images are getting lost in the ether. I posted an image of Messier 58, a 'nebula' (barred spiral galaxy) that Charles Messier had catalogued in 1779 when telescope were not much better than a good pair of eyes. Here is a link:

Each little tidbit of memory recall garners more glimpses into my history. I hoe you don't mind me sharing some of them.

In the late 1960s I lived in a Bay Area town called Menlo Park (about 15 miles from where I now live). The next town to the north is Atherton and this is where Willie Mays lived and still does. There is a road that cuts through many of the towns on the Peninsula named Alameda de las Pulgas (Road of the Fleas [more on this if you ask]).

The next town north of Atherton is Redwood City, where my parents lived and where I grew up. I was driving south on the Alameda after a short visit and as I approached Atherton I saw Willie Mays gold colored convertible Cadillac (he had personal license plates - 'MAYS').

I quickly rolled down my window and waved as he passed by (I doubt he saw me) and I was so happy at seeing him that I blew past the stop sign and ended up in the drainage ditch (no damage except to my ego).

Willie McCovey died last month at age 80, in Stanford, CA (adjacent to Menlo Park).

In 1959, a friend invited me to a Giants game at Seals Stadium, the Giant's first home in San Francisco. I was sitting in the stands along the right field foul line when Willie Mac came to the plate. It was his first time as a Giant. The pitcher threw an inside fast ball and Willie Mac hit it off the right field fence so hard that it bounced to the right fielder before he left the batter's box and he was nearly thrown out at first. Willie McCovey was THE Slugger.
