I love the idea of a Church pianist, but better an organ or very better still a harmonium! I own an 1870's Sterling reed organ from Derby, Connecticut that is very rare, I got it for £10, around 12 dollars, it's worth much more as it's a rare one. How on earth it came to England, don't ask me, but I deal in antiquities.... It takes up space but I love it!

I prefer the organ, too, but the one in my church is out of commission. I was right in the middle of the second hymn of the Easter service back in 2017 and everything but the bass pedals cut out. My brother looked it over, since I can repair a piano but electronics are beyond me, and we narrowed the problem down to the speaker. I've been trying to track down a replacement speaker since then, but I can't find one in the price range that the church will authorize and I'm not in a position to be able to pay for one without compensation.

It's amazing how small the world is really, I met someone that clearly knew someone, very closely, that you met! Banks was the best keyboardist of the day, with Wakeman a close second.... it was a new beginning, a renaissance of music that got dashed!!!!

I'm afraid there was a misunderstanding. I didn't meet Tony Banks. I was saying that it did me more good to meet the unknown, though widely heard, keyboardist than it would have to meet the man that got me into keyboards to begin with.

I actually lost a bit of respect for Banks when I found out that his condition for keeping the band together was to get rid of their drummer and hire one of "equal stature." Mayhew actually did pretty well on Trespass, so I'm sure he wasn't talking about music. Mayhew was the only working class member of Genesis. I'm not sure how the whole class system works in England, but as an egalitarian who couldn't care less about being descended from members of the merchant class the whole "get rid of this peasant or we shut down the band" thing rubbed me the wrong way.

I'm still on a Genesis kick, but lately I've been going back to Billy Joel. I honestly don't know what I think of him. Only the Good Die Young, a song I can't escape hearing at least every two days, is basically a few minutes of him saying "forget your values and jump into bed with me." As such it is the only song to date that I've heard that infuriates me to the point of wanting to punch the author.

But at the same time he wrote four of my all time favorite songs. I don't know if I want to chat with him for ideas or just break his jaw.

Oh some gems tonight. What a day, out with a friend buying collectables and antiques. Bought a £10 figure that is worth a standard 200-300 pounds! Others are 20+ hits.... oh my God am I good!!! Only one bad buy outta around 20.... a big Chicken vase, note to self.... never buy Chicken vases!!!!!!!

So I retire end of September.... I will be 60. Gonna take that sabbatical and finally travel, so watch out....

My new vocation has me with enough now to fill two long tables on antiques and collectable fair stalls a full of goodies three or four times over and I am raring to go!!!! I can't wait!!!! So excited!!!! I will be travelling all around Southern and Western England again, something I did with racecourses in my heyday..... no I was not a gambler, I worked at the races! And back then, I could bewitch many a man that was straight into 'king me....

The Banks Of The Old Ohio is a poular song. But.... not many people know that is s old. The original composition cannot be trace to any one person, though modern arrangements claim much. It is at least 19th century, but most likely an early tune. For many of such graphic horridness usually are at least 1810s if not 18th century, it for sure arrived from somewhere else and it would be good if someone, one day discovered a European ballad that is it's precursor.

Here is Olivia Newton-John with the tune..... fine Englishwoman she be, as is half... nay... quarter English of me, if ever there was.... (I must not forgot my eighth Irish and eighth Scottish bits on top of my half Norwegian bits)....



And on to another.... Kossoy Sisters, I'll Fly Away. The original and first. I love these twins!!!! This one is known, it was written in 1929 by Albert Brumley but still had an earlier influence it is thought. So the song could be very early. I'm gonna add 'Ohio' and 'Little Birdie by the Kossoy sisters and you may realise why they did not get the recognition they deserve. They were superb, but do not have the lustre, the falseness, the cheapness of the rubbish, sheer rubbish, trash, shit that sells as  being sold under false pretention as music today...... you get to see the sisters live on the last song, Little Birdie.

So I did like the film, Oh Brother, how art thou, because it showcased some great songs..... oh my did I like them!!!!

Kinda the style was already there, I surely don't have to put the Kissoys here again? . I like these



I accept there is no replacement for the Peasall Sisters, but the very famous... in the thirties Carter Sisters sang the song better...



I love these songs, simply because they are very, very old. They predate historic record by a century and more and are the true beginnings of modern music, and, sorry.... all modern music originates from Europe, I do not accept that it came from anywhere else. I am the most libertarian type of person, but I do like facts. And I do not doubt it is where the main stream of modern music arrived from, although it is true enough it had influence upon it's way.. My third most important hobby is the origin of music.

Early rock and roll in Lousiana, predates Bill Haley & The Comets by nearly thirty years...... this is pushing it but it has the same rythmn, many were closer to raw rock and roll in the twenties.

Hi Kidaakash,

The first one on the first post is too rugged, but I did like the second. I have to admit to not knowing of them. I have always had an interest in musical history, the progression of musical styles and the like and it is generally agreed that little has changed in the last four or five decades IThe first tune has a kind of mix between punk , new wave and metal, whatever the genre assigned these days. The second more popular beat combination, with a rock edge.

I liked the second post more of course, though The Weavers are a little to cheesey even for me. The song is of course one first recorded by Leadbelly, though it is generally agreed the melody was more of a discovery than his own tune.

Punk is widely thought to have originated in the UK in the mid-70's, not least because the Brits have played such a huge part on the world stage in musical origins over the centuries and in particular having big influence in popular music, that they tend to believe they invented far more than they did!

But, as many things are so, they did not invent punk, it has been around a lot longer it originates from Peru in the early 1960's. It is true of rock and roll too, not a U.S. derived sound. The rhythm being extant as early as the 1920's in other cultures.

Here is an example of Peruvian punk music, in 1964, it could have been recorded yesterday and still be popular. Such it is that little progression has been made in popular beat combination and it's style:

Love the bass pic. Have you insured your thumb as Mark King of Level 42 did, he had it up for £3 million!!!!!!! I guess bass guitarists get little recognition, the lead with all the so called smart stuff!

Who are your favourites Beth? Not that I am big with pop music particularlarly these days, but I do have some favourites of yore. There is of course McCartney, but more famous for writing, singing in truth and the Beatle bass was not necessarily a pronounced feature.

Who are your inspirations Beth, which bassists do you like?

I liked Noel Redding, I mean Hendrix is most definitely not my kinda sound, but I listen to things often and was into Hey Joe and listened to some other songs of Hendrix. I'm not totally disliking raw sounds, I like Janis Joplin and the like occasionally, anyway, I found Redding very good.

I think a bassist needs to be listenable and flowing, Redding was.

Two bands used to like were Rush and Genesis when I was a young teen, both had music where the bass could flourish and Lee and Rutherford were very good.

So me being me, one or two obscure ones then!, as I am super obscure with music. So that is John Graham Knight of Marmalade, an accomplished and top class bass, though they never always gave the bass enough prominence in their sounds and Matthew Karas of The Fallen Leaves, who do and he is brill too.... here is another nod towards a music I really do not like much of apart from them and a few others, but it's a biggy favourite! Fallen Leaves - Charity Girl!

Love that C. No idea why. But it's great. I throw my fist in the air every time I hear it. I do love bass though. I had a VW Golf. The previous owner aced the bass with the system in the car. Oh wow.

I don't know where you get your information, Celia, but Paul McCartney is one of the bassingest bassists to ever bass. He shaped me into more melodic counterpoints than I ever would have come up with on my own.

I like Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead a whole lot too. You can listen to his bass lines meander for 12 measures before you realise OMG he had a POINT to what he was playing. He doesn't play bass lines so much as bass swirls.

Christopher Squire of Yes shaped my playing as well. A bass player need not be dormant.

The ultimate Influence, were I to have to pick just one, however, is a little-known player by the name of Jaco Pastorius. He was The Greatest Bass Player In the World. And he would tell you so. Shame about his passing.

What do I listen to? Not much since my band fired me for coming out. After 20 years of playing together, you'd think they would have had my back. (Nobody you've ever heard of.)

What do I listen to when I do listen? Well, sometimes I put on the radio, and regret it pretty quickly. Uh....... Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Stone Temple Pilots, Macy Grey, Billy Joel, Alman Brothers sometimes, Doobie Brothers more often, uh...... Gyoto Monks, Various electronicas, Dead Kennedys, The Who, um.,........Whatever's on the jazz station.......

Mostly, tho, I just don't listen. I don't even hardly play any more. That band firing me dashed my dreams. Now I spend my passion simulating aircraft and articulated lorries (Scania for the win.)

Well Kaibeth. I don't know about your fascination for Scanias. But I get enthusiasm. Flight sim stuff I get though. Used to prefer the real thing obviously but of late I've found that the local ATC training college hire pilots and sim pilots to act as a pilot for training purposes. Using a sim. Needless to say my resume is in place.
But covid of course has messed it up

But they actually hire sim pilots who've never flown the real thing.

Anyway I'm hopeful. It's only a 45 minute drive from here.

Bit off the beaten track here...... sometimes on a Sunday morning I like to have Classic FM on, it's a British radio station, nice and smooth and eddicates me on classical stuff. This one came up the other Sunday, I like it lots now, I'm no classic whizz, I prefer either 60's sounds, a couple of banjos duelling, an accordian wheezing or Dolly bashing out an old favourite but this one stuck with me....
